How to Score Better in CBSE Class 12 Chemistry

Class 12 chemistry spreads its marks across three branches and the practical work, so a general improvement plan helped by one lucky chapter rarely last. The score goes up when you find out exactly where the marks leak, because the leaks are usually only two or three. Here is how to find them and close them.

Diagnose your mark leaks first

Take your most recent full chemistry paper and a three-column sheet labelled physical, organic and inorganic. Award every lost mark to one of the three columns and add a note for the cause: wrong formula, half-remembered reaction, spelling, no condition, or calculation slip. The column with the most marks is your project for the month. Most students discover one branch is doing almost all the damage.

Physical chemistry: units and method first

Physical chemistry errors are usually method errors. Write the formula, substitute with units, and let the units check your work before you trust the number. NCERT examples first, then a few more of the same type, then a timed set. The approach is identical to the puzzle solving described in our physical chemistry numericals guide.

Organic chemistry: build by functional group

Class 12 organic questions reward students who can move between related compounds. Build one reaction map per functional group: what makes it, what it becomes, and the conditions each step needs. Practise conversion problems daily and read common organic mistakes before the exam so you recognise the traps.

Inorganic chemistry: test yourself, do not skim

Inorganic chapters feel familiar when you read them and empty when you close the book. So revise the way the exam finds you: recall pages written from memory, names and formulas the examiner will spell-check, and the periodic table as your base map. A recall routine for the periodic table lifts every inorganic chapter at once.

Answer formatting is worth real marks

  • Write balanced chemical equations with state symbols where the question expects them.
  • Give IUPAC names with careful spelling; a wrong letter costs the mark.
  • Show the reasoning sentence before a reason-based answer.
  • Mark separate parts of a question clearly and follow the working conventions taught for each type.

A weekly plan that raises the average

  1. Monday: attack the weakest branch from your diagnosis sheet with focused practice.
  2. Wednesday: one full previous-year paper, timed, with all answers formatted properly.
  3. Friday: review the paper, log every lost mark by cause.
  4. Weekend: redo from memory the reactions and formulas that leaked, then the periodic table once.

Run this rhythm for a month and the weakest column shrinks visibly, which is exactly what lifts an overall score.

The honest close

A better Class 12 chemistry score is a diagnostic project. Find the leaking branch, fix its method, format answers the way examiners mark them, and revise by recall. Do that steadily and the improvement is not luck.
